LBIF® was founded in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2008. Its design philosophy and outdoor character have been deeply influenced by the landscapes and conditions of the Scottish Highlands.
Founder Lucas Bifield was an industrial product designer, an experienced outdoor enthusiast and a father. Through years of using outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment, he recognised a recurring divide in the market.
Technical products offered necessary protection but were often heavy, rigid and disconnected from everyday life. Casual outdoor products were comfortable and easy to wear, but frequently lacked the structure and utility required by real outdoor conditions.
Why should protection require heaviness, and why should comfort mean giving up genuine outdoor function?
That question became the foundation of the LBIF® design approach: functional restraint. Rather than using unnecessary layers, complicated structures or excessive detailing to demonstrate performance, LBIF® focuses on purposeful construction, natural freedom of movement and clear layering systems.
Every feature should have a reason to exist, and every material should respond to the conditions in which the product will actually be used.
In selected sweatshirts, trousers and mid-layer garments, five-needle, six-thread flatlock stitching becomes a recognisable part of the LBIF® design language. Structural lines that would traditionally be concealed are brought to the surface and allowed to follow the movement of the body.
This reduces the bulky feel of conventional seams while giving simple garments greater energy and a more contemporary identity.
Colour is another defining element of LBIF®. Slate grey, peat brown, mist white and forest green form a restrained foundation. These tones are combined with brighter colours drawn from the natural landscape, including heather violet, rowan red, Highland loch blue and gorse yellow.
The intention is not to reproduce nature literally, but to learn from the way colour exists within it: broad areas of calm and stability, interrupted by smaller moments of brightness and life. This creates a distinctive colour system that can move naturally between open landscapes, travel and the modern city.
The same principles extend across LBIF® menswear, womenswear, kidswear, footwear and equipment. Clothing supports movement and environmental adaptability. Footwear forms the connection between the body and the ground. Backpacks, bottles and accessories respond to the practical needs of moving, pausing and exploring.
LBIF® does not present the outdoors as an escape from real life, nor does it define adventure through the conquest of nature. The outdoors is a way of restoring connection—with the body, with distance, with weather, with time and with the environments of which we remain a part.
As the world becomes increasingly urban and digital, outdoor experience will no longer be limited to specialist sport or occasional expeditions. It will become an important way for people to recover attention, build resilience and understand their relationship with the natural world.
Freedom is not measured only by how far we travel. It begins with the ability to move at our own pace, choose our own direction and recognise the responsibility that comes with entering the outdoors.
